Heroes in defeat - words which sum up the amazing effort by our players in the dramatic conclusion to our glorious European adventure. They always do us proud but on 21st May 2003, against searing heat, an incompetent referee who was never in control of the match and the diving, cheating and gamesmanship of the Porto players, namely Dereli who was rolling about the ground, feigning injury every opportunity he could get, they were immense.
We were ALL immense.... and by we, I mean everyone - the players who put every last ounce of effort into that battle and the fans who gave our fantastic players the backing they deserve, we followed them to Seville in our droves, numbering from 55 to 80,000 Celts flocked to the city in a friendly invasion of pride, passion and great humour - we're all in it together and we can all take stock and look on this superb European run with nothing but immense pride, the memorable European nights in Liverpool, Blackburn and Boavista to name but a few, and the best things is - theres more to come!
We can all look forward to next season's European football with great anticipation and with MON hopefully getting a decent old war chest to improve some areas of the team then maybe we'll make that final step up to European success.
Reading some of the Porto players after-match comments, they seem almost apologetic for depriving our fans of the Uefa Cup and that sums up what this run in Europe has been about. The stock of Celtic has risen and once again the club will be talked about in glowing terms around the world.
The words of Porto player Costinha, (and I quote ): "The Celtic fans are the best, it is our job to win this trophy but they deserve one of their own."
Thank you Martin, and the players
Hail Hail
